Students at San Domenico’s all-school annual Thanksgiving Food Drive in San Anselmo collected 18,527 cans, the largest such charity effort by a school in Marin and San Francisco counties.

Around 500 of the school’s students helped load two delivery trucks from the San Francisco Marin Food Bank on Friday. About 800 people, including students and school employees, contributed to the bounty.

School officials said the high can count was driven, in part, by a competition between “teams” of students attempting to gather the most cans. Students gathered cans from their home pantries, by purchasing them from the store, or by collecting from neighbors through what students called a “trick-or-donate” strategy.

San Domenico made the biggest contribution by a school to the Food Bank last Thanksgiving, as well, when it collected about 11,000 cans.

The Food Bank plans to distribute a million pounds of food to 144,000 people in Marin and San Francisco counties during Thanksgiving week.
