Don QuichotteMassenet Masterpieces

Jules Massenet was the most popular French opera composer of the late 1800s. Yet, only his Manon is staged regularly. Explore this masterpiece and five lesser-known gems from his gorgeous repertoire. On a journey with James Sokol through stories, music and video performance clips, experience…

Nov 6:  Le Roi de Lahore – Massenet’s first major success focuses on the eternal love of a king and a priestess set in exotic India.

Nov 13:  Manon – This great “war horses” of the French repertoire follows the story of a country girl who becomes the toast of Paris as she struggles between her desire for love and her love for luxury.

Nov 20:  Thaïs – Find out what happens when an Egyptian courtesan and a Cenobite monk cross paths while gorgeous soaring music surrounds them.

Dec 4:  Cendrillon – A rarely-staged, melodious version of the Cinderella story.

Dec 11:  Chérubin – This charming extension of The Marriage of Figaro centers on the young page (known, in Italian, as “Cherubino”) who searches for love in all the wrong places.  Does he find it?  Join us to find out!

Dec 18:  Don Quichotte – A lyrical retelling of Cervantes’ tale of the chivalrous knight who lives in his own dream, seeing the world through rose-colored glasses.

Though unknown to most, these operas are sure to delight both the opera newcomer and the long-time fan.
